Rinse out your recyclables

This is a crucial step that most people skip. It’s not enough to just toss the plastic in the bin, make sure it’s clean so you don’t contaminate other recyclables. While some waste facilities rinse for you, it’s best to err on the side of caution — why risk your waste not being recycled at all? Clean it before you bin it!

Do your research

Read up on your city’s recycling policies to see what actually is and isn’t recyclable in your area. While some cities take recyclables #1-#7, your town may only take #1 and #2. This is a great refreshed when it comes to items you’re unsure about, including plastic bags and hard plastic bottles. The more you know, the more you’ll be able to optimize your recycling resources.

Hunt around

Look for external places to recycle special items, like batteries, electronics, and motor oil. While it may take you an extra drive to haul your stuff out to the correct location, it still beats the landfill! Take the time to see where those locations are, and encourage your friends to do the same.

Landscape recycling

Just because your waste is green and leafy doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have a specific place to be! Be aware of waste pickup and cleanup days to make sure your lawn scraps are disposed of in the proper way. Remember to compost what can’t be recycled… Check out this guide to composting for beginners!

Do your part and encourage other to recycle around you!

Reduce, reuse and recycle… but don’t forget to bin it!
